How to choose stage decking
A good stage starts with the deck: grid, load rating and support. A short guide to the decisions that determine safety, build speed and cost.
1. Grid and dimensions
The standard module is 2×1 m — all common stages are built from it (4×3, 6×4, 8×6 m…). Smaller 1×1 m decks help with steps and infills. Sketch the floor plan first: modules = area ÷ 2 m².
2. Height and legs
- Fixed legs — fastest build, for flat floors.
- Telescopic legs — levelling on uneven ground; each leg adjusts separately.
- Typical heights: 20–120 cm; above 100 cm we recommend a structural check and extra bracing.
3. Load rating
For public events plan at least 500 kg/m² (dancing, gear, backline). Check the manufacturer rating per module and per support point — quality aluminium decks with waterproof anti-slip plywood carry this as standard.
4. Surface and conditions
- Anti-slip plywood (hexagonal) — the standard indoors and out.
- Outdoors: waterproof glue, corrosion-free aluminium frame, option to cover.
5. Guardrails, stairs, ramps
Safety rule: from 60 cm platform height, guardrails on the rear and side edges are standard practice; add stairs for access and a ramp (max 8 % slope) for accessibility.
