Kelvin is not colour quality

Distinguish white-light tone, colour rendering and camera behaviour.

Sources checked 11 September 2026.

White-light tone

Correlated colour temperature (CCT) describes the appearance of white light. Lower values generally look warmer; higher values cooler. Two luminaires with the same CCT can still render materials differently.

Eyes and cameras

CRI and TLCI are not interchangeable metrics. EBU developed TLCI to assess colour rendering in a television chain. For filming, supplement specifications with the actual camera, dimming level and recording settings.

Try the actual materials

View a wall, fabric or product sample under the proposed lighting. Include the intended atmosphere, existing light and filming needs in your brief. On-screen colour is only illustrative.

Two more useful answers

Is cooler light always brighter?

No. CCT does not measure flux or illuminance.

Does high TLCI guarantee no flicker?

No. Colour rendering and temporal light behaviour are separate checks.
