From a DMX line to an Art-Net network

Separate the signal, transport network and physical connector.

Sources checked 11 September 2026.

A DMX line has a topology

ETC recommends daisy-chaining devices and a 120 Ω end termination. Passive Y-splitting reduces reliability. Use a suitable active splitter when branches are needed.

A network carries multiple universes

Art-Net transports DMX512 and RDM data over Ethernet. sACN is another network protocol for lighting data. A node converts supported network data into a physical DMX output.

Diagnose one layer at a time

If a fixture does not respond, check power, mode, address and universe. Then check protocol and network configuration. A short known-good connection helps separate a device fault from an installation issue.

Two more useful answers

Is Art-Net the same as the internet?

No. It is a lighting protocol that can run on a local network.

Can a network switch replace a DMX splitter?

Not on a physical DMX line. They handle different connection types.
